I agree with Thomas on all accounts. In general I think it's cool that the italic is a bit quirky, but too much of the quirkiness just looks flimsy now. It's too feeble to match the roman.1 -

I still prefer the top ones. I think a little 'dancing about' is appropriate for a Garamondish typeface. Bottom ones might be easier to read though, and certainly easier to hint.2 -
